Historian Basil Davidson visits the ruins of this immense city in Southern Africa. So great were these ruins, that Europeans of the nineteenth centuries could not bring themselves to admit that they were built by Africans but must have been inspired from outside Africa. Davidson explains that Great Zimbabwe would have been a key point of contact for the coastal trading towns. There, Zimbabwean gold would have been traded for items from across the world brought by Swahili merchants.
